Department of English

In the story of human progression the value of English language has always been widely accepted. The Department of English came into existence in 1965 with the opening of the college. Since its inception, the department has contributed profusely in improving the literary sensibilities and communication skills of the students. The journey started under the able guidance of Mrs. Santosh Agrawal. Dr. (Miss) Veena Dwivedi took over in 1970 and the department flourished during her regime, till she left in 1999. Dr. (Mrs.) Kiran Bala Saxena headed the department from 1999 to 2006. Since 2006 Dr. (Mrs.) Rakesh Arora is in charge of the department. The growth is undoubtedly spectacular, from three teachers in the department, we are seven in number today. , Due to the efforts of the college administration, M.A. in English was introduced under self-finance scheme in the session 2010-11. A certificate course was started in communication skills with financial support from UGC. A digital language lab was established with eleven computers and installation of Orell software. Thus we are helping students learn the nuances of English language with the help of technology.

Mission
  • To impart knowledge of British, American and Indian English prose, poetry, drama, fiction, history of English literature, literary forms, literary criticism and theory.
  • Encouraging students to read literary texts in different contexts - social, historical, cultural, political - which leads to a heightened understanding of a work.
  • Facilitating students to acquire English language and translation skills.
  • Developing critical reading and thinking skills in students.
  • Using technology in classroom teaching which results in enhanced learning.
  • Increasing the learning potential of students through co-curricular activities.

The department uses ICT and audio- visual aids to make the learning process interesting and effective. The department has a smart TV, an LCD TV, an LED projector and an OHP. We show movies which are based on the literary works of the writers prescribed in the syllabus. The dramas of Shakespeare are also shown to the students.

Literary Activities - The English Literary Association regularly organises literary activities. From time to time our students have enacted Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Monkey's Paw, Porphyria's Lover, Pygmalion, Like the Sun, The Merchant of Venice, Candida, While the Auto Waits, on the college stage and won accolades. Dramatic monologue and soliloquy performance, essay writing, quiz competition, debate competition, poetry recitation, poster making, are regularly organised to bring the latent talents of the students to the fore. Furthermore, their writing skills are given a platform in the English section of the college magazine , Gyananjali.

Achievements - It is really tough to summarise the achievements of a department over the past 55 years. Our students are well placed in society. Some of them were selected in IAS and PCS examinations, posted as assistant professors in reputed degree colleges, many are working as teachers in schools.
